Chapter 7 - Breathing Poison

The greenish smoke burned their eyes and scorched their throats immediately.
Enzo dropped his gun, clutching his chest as he fell to his knees.
He gasped for air, but each breath felt like inhaling shattered glass.
Beatrice ripped a piece of fabric from her shirt and pressed it over her mouth.
She grabbed another piece, soaked it with water from a nearby bottle, and forced it over Enzo’s face.
He tried to push her away, still blinded by his hatred, but he was too weak.
She dragged him toward the heavy steel door, throwing her weight against it.
It didn't budge, the electronic lock holding firm.
The hissing from the vents grew louder, filling the room faster than they could breathe.
Beatrice pulled a small explosive charge from her tactical belt.
It was a breaching tool she had saved for absolute emergencies.
She slapped it onto the locking mechanism and dragged Enzo behind an overturned metal table.
She screamed at him to cover his ears and keep his mouth open.
The explosion shook the foundations of the safehouse, blowing the heavy door off its hinges.
Fresh air rushed in, mixing with the toxic cloud.
Beatrice hauled Enzo to his feet, throwing his arm over her shoulder.
They stumbled out into the damp night air of the abandoned garage.
Enzo fell onto the concrete, violently throwing up as his lungs tried to clear the poison.
Beatrice crouched beside him, keeping her pistol aimed at the shadows.
She knew Marco’s men would be coming to verify the kill.
Headlights swept across the frosted windows of the garage doors.
Two black SUVs slammed to a halt outside.
Beatrice hauled Enzo toward a dusty pickup truck parked in the back corner.
She hotwired it just as armed men kicked in the side door.
She slammed the truck into reverse, smashing through the wooden garage doors.
Bullets shattered the windshield as they sped away into the dark streets.
Enzo slumped against the passenger door, barely conscious but alive.
Beatrice navigated the tight industrial alleys, pushing the engine to its limit.
She glanced over at Enzo, relieved that he was still breathing.
May you like
Then she felt a sudden, sharp pressure against her throat.
A thin wire tightened around her neck from the darkness of the backseat.
