Chapter 3 - The Ghost Protocol

The voice belonged to Leo, Enzo’s supposedly loyal bodyguard.
Leo stepped into the red glow of the light, holding a suppressed pistol aimed right at Enzo.
He smiled, apologizing to his boss for the inconvenience.
Enzo stared at the man who had eaten at his table for ten years.
He asked Leo how much the enemy had paid for his soul.
Leo laughed quietly, explaining that it was not about money, but about survival.
He said the people hunting Beatrice were a force of nature that no mafia family could withstand.
Beatrice slowly shifted her weight, keeping her hands visible.
She asked Leo if he really thought they would let him live after he served his purpose.
Leo confidently stated that he had a guaranteed extraction waiting at the boathouse.
He raised the gun higher, aiming squarely at Enzo’s head.
He said the boss had to die to complete the contract.
Before Leo could pull the trigger, Beatrice kicked the red glow stick into the air.
The sudden spinning light distracted Leo for a fraction of a second.
It was all the time Beatrice needed.
She lunged forward, closing the distance with terrifying speed.
She slammed her elbow into Leo’s wrist, forcing the gun to discharge into the stone ceiling.
The deafening crack echoed in the confined space.
Leo grunted and threw a heavy left hook that caught Beatrice in the jaw.
She barely flinched, driving her knee into his stomach.
Enzo watched in awe as his maid dismantled a trained killer.
Leo stumbled back, pulling a combat knife from his belt.
He slashed wildly, catching Beatrice on the forearm.
Blood quickly soaked her dark sleeve, but her expression never changed.
She stepped inside his guard, grabbed his knife arm, and twisted it until a sickening crack echoed through the tunnel.
Leo dropped the knife and fell to his knees, gasping for air.
Beatrice picked up his fallen pistol and aimed it at his chest.
Enzo stepped forward, demanding to know who ordered the hit.
Leo coughed up blood, a twisted smile forming on his lips.
He looked Enzo in the eye and whispered that family is the worst kind of poison.
Leo gasped his final breath, leaving the sentence hanging in the cold air.
Enzo froze, the color draining from his face as the realization hit him.

He looked at Beatrice with wide, terrified eyes.
His brother Marco, who supposedly died five years ago, was still alive.
