Chapter 4 - The Sabotage

Vincent stared at Clara, his mind struggling to process the impossible accusation against his most trusted lieutenant.

Dominic had fought by his side for fifteen years, shedding blood to build the very empire they now controlled.

Vincent aggressively grabbed Clara by the collar of her trench coat and shoved her forcefully into the closet.

He quickly hid the dismantled wheelchair parts and shoved the listening bug deep into his own pocket.

He smoothed his expensive suit jacket, took a deep breath, and unlocked the heavy bedroom door.

Dominic stood in the hallway, his hands resting casually on his tactical belt as he peered suspiciously into the room.

Vincent lied smoothly, claiming he was just checking on Matteo because the boy was having a nightmare.

Dominic accepted the lie with a nod, but his eyes slowly scanned the shadows of the large bedroom.

He casually mentioned that the perimeter guards had reported a severe drop in the barometric pressure outside.

A massive, unprecedented coastal storm was rapidly moving in from the freezing Atlantic ocean.

Dominic suggested that they move Matteo to the underground bunker just in case the power grid failed.

Vincent felt a cold sweat break out on the back of his neck as he realized it was a perfect trap.

Moving Matteo into the windowless bunker would completely isolate them from the rest of the loyal guards.

Vincent forced a fake smile and told Dominic they would stay upstairs where it was more comfortable.

Dominic's expression hardened for a fraction of a second before he turned and walked away down the corridor.

Vincent immediately locked the door again and pulled Clara out of the dark closet.

He handed her a spare, loaded magazine for his pistol and told her they needed to arm themselves heavily.

Suddenly, a deafening crack of thunder violently shook the thick glass windows of the estate.

The bright crystal chandeliers above them flickered rapidly before completely dying out.

The entire sixty-acre fortress was instantly plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

Vincent waited for the heavy hum of the massive backup generators to kick in, but the house remained entirely silent.

Clara grabbed a tactical flashlight from her bag and whispered that the traitor had just cut their only lifeline.
