Chapter 2 - The Eavesdropper

Vincent immediately pulled a heavy, suppressed pistol from his desk drawer and chambered a round.
His entire empire had been built on eliminating threats before they ever had the chance to strike.
He sprinted out of the bunker, his mind racing with terrifying calculations about the woman he had just allowed near his son.
He moved silently through the grand hallways, avoiding his own security patrols to keep the element of surprise.
When he reached the east corridor, Clara was already gone.
He followed her path back toward the kitchen, but a strange noise coming from Matteo's room stopped him dead in his tracks.
Vincent carefully pushed the heavy oak door open just a fraction of an inch.
Clara was back inside the bedroom, kneeling on the floor beside Matteo's custom wheelchair.
She had completely dismantled the electronic joystick panel that controlled the chair's motorized wheels.
Vincent raised his weapon, fully prepared to shoot her directly through the wooden door.
Then, Clara held up a tiny, metallic object no larger than a grain of rice.
Matteo was staring at the object with wide, terrified eyes.
Clara pressed her finger to her lips, signaling for the boy to remain absolutely silent.
She reached for a notepad on the desk and quickly scribbled a sentence in bold letters.
Vincent squinted through the crack in the door to read the handwritten note.
The paper said that someone inside this house was listening to every single word they said.
Vincent lowered his gun, realizing the tiny object in her hand was a military-grade audio transmitter.
He had personally wired the estate with hidden cameras, but he had never installed listening bugs in his son's medical equipment.
Someone else had bypassed his multimillion-dollar security grid to spy on his paralyzed child.

Before Vincent could step into the room to confront her, Clara flipped the notepad over and wrote a second sentence for Matteo.
The new message stated that the men who murdered his mother were coming back to finish the job tonight.
