Chapter 5 - The Breath of Survival

The echoing slam of the steel doors sealed their doom in the dark, damp cellar.
Dr. Silva chuckled darkly, keeping his weapon trained directly on Clara and the trembling child.
He confidently explained that the remote detonator had also activated the estate's industrial pest control system.
A sharp, chemical hissing sound began echoing from the ventilation shafts above their heads.
Thick, green toxic gas started pouring heavily into the enclosed space, designed to suffocate everything within minutes.
Dr. Silva reached into his pocket for a compact gas mask, perfectly prepared for his own lethal trap.
But he had severely underestimated the physical recovery of the man he had been poisoning for three years.
Adrian did not hesitate or tremble as he launched himself forward with explosive, deadly speed.
He closed the distance before the doctor could pull the trigger, driving his knee brutally into the man's chest.
The suppressed pistol clattered harmlessly to the stone floor as Dr. Silva collapsed in agony.
Adrian grabbed the doctor's gas mask and immediately strapped it tightly onto little Lily's face.
Enzo ripped off his own shirt, soaking it in a shattered bottle of wine to cover Clara's mouth and nose.
The toxic fog was growing incredibly thick, burning Adrian's eyes and making his lungs scream for oxygen.
He remembered a blueprint of the original 1920s estate that showed a forgotten bootlegger hatch beneath the oldest wine racks.
Adrian and Enzo frantically pushed a massive, hundred-pound oak barrel aside, their muscles straining against the immense weight.
Beneath the barrel was a rusted iron grate covered in decades of dirt and thick spiderwebs.
Enzo used the butt of the doctor's dropped gun to smash the heavy iron padlock into pieces.
Adrian pulled the grate open, shoving Clara and Lily down into the dark, narrow dirt tunnel just as he inhaled a lungful of poison.
He tumbled down the shaft right behind them, pulling the heavy grate shut to block the deadly gas.
They crawled blindly through the suffocating darkness for what felt like hours, guided only by pure survival instinct.
When they finally kicked open the wooden exit panel, they spilled out into the humid air of the surrounding forest.
May you like
Adrian gasped desperately for clean air, pulling Clara and Lily into a fierce, protective embrace.
But their brief moment of relief shattered when a bright spotlight suddenly blinded them from the trees.
