Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

Leo slammed on the brakes, sending the heavy ambulance skidding on the wet highway.

He turned around in the driver's seat and stared at Olivia through the metal partition.

"What did he just say?" Leo demanded.

"He said Isabella," Olivia repeated, rubbing her bruised wrist.

Leo turned perfectly white.

"That is impossible," Leo muttered, gripping the steering wheel tight.

"Isabella was his sister."

"She died in a car crash ten years ago."

Olivia looked down at the unconscious mafia boss.

His heart rate was slowly rising, indicating that the fever from his infections was returning.

"He is hallucinating from the trauma," Olivia suggested.

"We need to get him to a safe location before his organs shut down again."

Leo nodded slowly and pressed the gas pedal back to the floor.

They drove to a secret underground clinic located beneath an abandoned meatpacking plant.

It was a black-market facility used strictly for patching up wounded mobsters.

They carried Vincent inside and placed him on a stainless steel operating table.

The clinic was completely dark and strangely silent.

"Doctor Evans should be here," Leo said, drawing his weapon and searching the rooms.

Olivia began hooking Vincent up to the clinic's advanced monitoring equipment.

She opened the large medical supply cabinets to find broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Every single shelf was completely bare.

The glass vials had been smashed, and the IV bags had been slashed open with a knife.

"Someone has been here," Olivia called out, panic rising in her chest.

"They destroyed all the medicine."

Leo walked back into the main surgical room holding a bloody doctor's coat.

"They didn't just destroy the medicine," Leo said grimly.

"They took Doctor Evans."

Vincent began to seize on the metal table, his body shaking violently.

His fever had reached a critical, life-threatening level.

"Do something!" Leo yelled.

"I have nothing to treat him with!" Olivia screamed back.

She looked frantically around the ruined clinic.

Her eyes landed on a large, locked metal door at the back of the facility labeled "Veterinary Supply".
