Chapter 6 - The Bridge Ambush

Dominic slammed on the brakes, throwing the SUV into a violent spin.
The vehicle slammed into the concrete barricade, shattering the windows.
Rain and smoke poured into the cabin.
"Keep your head down!" Dominic yelled, grabbing his rifle.
Dozens of armed men emerged from the shadows at both ends of the bridge.
They opened fire, sending a relentless hail of bullets against the armored glass.
The bulletproof windows began to spiderweb under the intense pressure.
Dominic kicked his door open and rolled onto the wet asphalt.
He ignored the agonizing pain in his leg and returned fire with lethal precision.
He dropped three attackers in less than five seconds.
Clare covered Ellie's body with her own, listening to the deafening roar of gunfire.
She noticed a secondary escape vehicle parked near the maintenance stairs of the bridge.
"Dominic!" Clare screamed, pointing toward the stairs.
Dominic saw the car and nodded.
"I will provide cover fire!" he shouted.
"Run on my count!"
He reloaded his rifle and stood up, exposing himself to the enemy.
"Three!"
"Two!"
"One!"
Dominic unleashed a massive volley of suppressive fire.
Clare grabbed Ellie and sprinted across the rain-slicked pavement.
Bullets sparked against the concrete right next to her feet.
She reached the escape car and threw the door open.
Dominic limped heavily behind her, firing his weapon until it clicked empty.
He dove into the driver's seat and hot-wired the engine in seconds.
They sped away down the maintenance road, leaving the burning bridge behind.
The adrenaline slowly began to fade, leaving absolute silence in the car.
Dominic's phone buzzed in his pocket.
He pulled it out and stared at the screen.
It was a text message from Vincent's secure number.
"I am sorry, Dominic."
"I chose the winning side."
Clare looked at the message over his shoulder.
"We have nowhere left to go," she whispered.

Dominic threw the phone out the window into the rain.
"We are going to the one place Vincent doesn't know about," Dominic said.
