Chapter 2 - The Ice Treatment

Vincent yelled into his radio for the medical team.
"Forget the medical team!" Clare shouted over the noise.
She dropped to her knees beside the seizing mafia boss.
"The doctor on your payroll is the one who planted this."
Vincent froze for a fraction of a second.
He realized the maid was absolutely right.
"What do we do?" Vincent demanded.
Clare did not hesitate.
She grabbed the heavy silk necktie from Vincent's collar and ripped it off.
She tied it ruthlessly tight just above Dominic's knee.
"I need ice," Clare ordered.
Vincent stared at her.
"Get me ice right now or his heart will stop!"
Vincent scrambled toward the estate's massive kitchen.
Clare placed both hands on Dominic's chest, feeling his erratic heartbeat.
Ellie stood quietly in the corner, holding her wooden latch toy.
Vincent returned seconds later with a massive metal bucket of ice.
Clare dumped the freezing contents directly over Dominic's bare leg.
"The cold slows the blood circulation," Clare explained rapidly.
"The tourniquet prevents the paralytic from reaching his heart."
Dominic's seizure suddenly stopped.
He gasped loudly, his dark eyes snapping open in pure agony.
"You saved his life," Vincent whispered in shock.
Before Clare could respond, the heavy wooden doors of the great room swung open.
Dr. Evans, the independent physician Dominic had just requested, walked into the room.
He carried a black leather medical bag and wore a pristine white coat.
"I received the emergency call," Dr. Evans said smoothly.
Vincent stood up, visibly relieved to see a fresh doctor.
Clare backed away, pulling Ellie closely against her side.
Ellie pointed her small finger at the new doctor.
"Mommy, that is the man from the driveway."
Dr. Evans stopped walking.
Dominic pushed himself up on his elbows, shivering from the ice.
"What did you say, Ellie?" Dominic rasped.
Ellie hid her face in her mother's dress.
"He was giving an envelope to Mr. Arthur yesterday," the little girl mumbled.

Vincent slowly rested his hand on his holstered weapon.
Dr. Evans dropped his medical bag and reached into his coat for a gun.
