Chapter 6 - The Corrupt Detective

Miller slammed his foot on the gas, speeding aggressively down the slick highway.
Eleanor held Lily tightly, glaring at the back of the detective's head in the rearview mirror.
"Why are the doors locked, Miller?" Eleanor demanded, her voice dripping with venom.
Miller did not answer immediately, keeping his eyes fixed on the dark road ahead.
"I need to know you won't jump out when I tell you the truth," he finally replied.
"You lied to me twenty years ago," Eleanor screamed, hitting the reinforced glass divider.
"You showed me a burned car and told me my little girl was dead!"
Miller sighed heavily, his face contorting with decades of buried guilt and shame.
"Arthur paid me two million dollars to fake the DNA report and close the investigation," Miller confessed.
Eleanor felt sick to her stomach, realizing the depths of the conspiracy against her family.
"Arthur wanted her inheritance, and he knew he could not get it if she was alive," Miller explained.
"But I could not let him kill a child, so I arranged for her to be locked in the asylum instead."
"You are a coward and a monster," Eleanor spat, her eyes burning with pure hatred.
"I know," Miller agreed softly.
"But tonight, I am finally going to make things right and save your daughter."
Miller claimed he knew exactly which shipping container Arthur was using to smuggle Clara out of the country.
He drove them toward the massive, industrial shipping docks on the edge of the city.
The car stopped silently behind a mountain of rusted cargo crates.
Miller unlocked the doors and pulled a heavy service pistol from his shoulder holster.
"She is in container number four-zero-nine," Miller whispered, pointing toward the water.
Eleanor grabbed Lily's hand and stepped cautiously out of the vehicle.
Suddenly, she heard the terrifying sound of a gun hammer being cocked back.

She turned around to find Miller aiming the pistol directly at her chest.
"I am sorry, Eleanor, but Arthur just offered me ten million dollars to finish the job," Miller sneered.
