Chapter 2 - The Man in the Shadows

Eleanor did not hesitate for a single second.
She grabbed a heavy crystal wine decanter from the table and smashed it across the waiter's face.
The man groaned in pain and released his grip on the little girl.
Eleanor pulled the child behind her back to shield her from danger.
The waiter wiped blood from his cheek and glared at Eleanor with murderous intent.
He reached into his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a sharp hunting knife.
The entire restaurant erupted into pure chaos as wealthy patrons screamed and ran for the exits.
Eleanor threw a heavy wooden chair into the man's path to slow him down.
She grabbed the little girl's hand and sprinted through the swinging doors of the kitchen.
They dodged terrified chefs and slipped out through the greasy back alley door.
Eleanor pushed the girl into the back seat of her waiting armored limousine.
She ordered her private driver to speed to her high-security penthouse immediately.
The limousine roared to life and merged into the busy city traffic.
Eleanor finally caught her breath and pulled the shaking child into a tight hug.
"What is your name, sweet girl?" Eleanor asked gently.
"My name is Lily," the child sniffled.
Eleanor promised Lily that nobody would ever hurt her again.
They arrived at the penthouse, and Eleanor immediately locked the heavy steel doors.
She gave Lily a warm bath and dressed her in an oversized silk shirt.
Eleanor sat beside the child on the bed and asked who the bad men were.
"I don't know their names, but the boss is scary," Lily whispered nervously.
"What does the boss look like?" Eleanor pressed.
"He always walks with a silver cane that has a wolf's head on top," Lily answered.
Eleanor felt the blood freeze in her veins.
That perfectly described the custom cane owned by her billionaire husband, Arthur.

The heavy steel door of the penthouse suddenly clicked open.
Arthur walked into the room, leaning heavily on his silver wolf cane with a sinister smile.
