Chapter 6 - The Free Fall

The massive metal elevator plunged violently down the dark shaft into the abyss.
The deafening crash of the cabin hitting the basement floor shook the entire building.
Maya and Vance clung desperately to a greasy maintenance ladder on the side of the concrete shaft.
They were suspended terrifyingly high in the darkness between the thirtieth and thirty-first floors.
"Keep climbing upward, Maya, do not look down," Vance commanded with a shaking voice.
Maya's arms burned with absolute exhaustion as she pulled herself up the rusty metal rungs.
They reached the heavy steel doors of the thirty-second floor and frantically pried them open.
They collapsed onto the plush carpet of the luxury hallway, gasping for precious oxygen.
But their desperate moment of safety was violently interrupted by the sound of approaching boots.
Two heavily armed mercenaries were aggressively sweeping the corridor with tactical flashlights.
Maya and Vance scrambled behind a massive marble decorative fountain to hide.
"Check every single room, they have to be on this floor," one of the killers ordered.
Maya knew they could not fight heavily armed men with absolutely empty hands.
She noticed a heavy brass fire extinguisher mounted on the wall directly above them.
She waited until the first mercenary walked past their hiding spot in the dark.
Maya violently pulled the heavy extinguisher off the wall and smashed it into the back of his knees.
The mercenary screamed in pain and collapsed heavily onto the marble floor.
Vance aggressively lunged forward and kicked the man's dropped assault rifle down the hall.
The second mercenary spun around and raised his weapon to fire at Maya.
Suddenly, a deafening gunshot echoed from the opposite end of the luxury corridor.
The second mercenary dropped his weapon and slumped lifelessly against the wall.
Maya stared in absolute shock as a figure stepped out from the dark shadows.
May you like
It was Manager Sterling, bleeding heavily from his shoulder but holding a smoking pistol.
"I told you the protocol requires us to eliminate pests, Mr. Vance," Sterling smiled weakly.
