Chapter 7 - The Fatal Mistake

David stood triumphantly over his dying sister with his heavy gun pointed straight at my head.
He truly believed he had orchestrated the perfect crime to walk away with a billion-dollar fortune.
He took a slow, confident step forward, clearly savoring the final moments of his ten-year deception.
"Put the gun down, Clara, and I promise I will make it quick," David sneered maliciously.
I knew I could not win a direct shootout with a man who clearly had professional weapons training.
Instead of aiming my pistol at him, I aimed it directly at the massive, high-pressure fire extinguisher mounted on the kitchen wall.
I squeezed the trigger, and the loud gunshot echoed through the luxury apartment.
The bullet pierced the pressurized metal tank, causing it to violently explode into a massive cloud of thick white chemical foam.
David screamed in agony as the toxic chemicals blasted directly into his open eyes, completely blinding him.
He began firing his suppressed gun wildly into the white smoke, shattering windows and destroying expensive furniture.
I dropped to the floor and crawled rapidly toward the kitchen island, blindly searching for the laptop.
My fingers brushed against the small metal USB drive, which had just finished downloading the crucial video evidence.
I snatched the drive, scrambled toward the shattered balcony glass, and threw myself out into the pouring rain.
I landed heavily on the metal fire escape, painfully bruising my ribs, but I did not stop moving.
I sprinted down the rusty metal stairs while David blindly fired his remaining bullets out the window into the dark alleyway.
I ran for six solid blocks until my lungs burned, completely losing myself in the maze of the city's underground subway system.
I rode the empty trains for hours to make sure I was not being followed before finally returning to Mark's hidden veterinary clinic.
Mark was waiting for me with a secure, offline laptop to safely view the stolen hospital files.
I plugged the USB drive in, desperately hoping I finally had the evidence to put David and my mother in prison forever.

We opened the hidden security files, but the footage was not from the pediatric wing at all.
The video clearly showed my mother standing in a dark hospital room ten years ago, calmly smothering my wealthy father to death with a pillow.
