Chapter 1 - The Shattered Sanctuary

The pediatric hospital room was supposed to be a completely safe sanctuary for my sick child.
The sterile white walls and the steady beep of the heart monitor usually brought me a sense of deep peace.
Then my incredibly wealthy mother walked through the heavy wooden door without even knocking.
She marched straight toward the bed with a cold and calculating look in her dark eyes.
She violently ripped my daughter’s favorite stuffed rabbit from her tiny hands and threw it aggressively onto the cold tile floor.
Then she grabbed little Elodie by the arm and dragged her roughly out of the hospital bed.
My little girl was still connected to vital oxygen tubes, which stretched dangerously tight across her pale face.
I rushed into the room in a blind panic and shouted for her to let go of my child immediately.
I expected to see shock or embarrassment on her face for being caught in such a cruel act.
My mother did not look ashamed or guilty at all.
She actually looked absolutely furious with me for interrupting her.
"She is just pretending to be sick to get attention," my mother sneered coldly, tightening her grip on Elodie's fragile arm.
My sweet daughter broke free, ran to me, and clung to my shirt like she was terrified I would leave her alone again.
Tears streamed down her pale cheeks as she gasped for the air the oxygen tubes usually provided.
Then she whispered a horrifying truth that instantly shattered my entire world.
"Grandma does this every single time you go to the cafeteria to get coffee."
Sarah, the attending nurse standing near the doorway, completely changed her expression from confusion to pure horror.
Because she suddenly realized she had seen this terrifying pattern before with other mysteriously injured children.
The nurse stepped forward and confidently stated that Elodie's previous unexplained bruises were definitely not from falling out of bed.
My mother slowly turned around and calmly locked the heavy hospital door from the inside with a loud, echoing click.
She reached into her expensive designer purse and pulled out a dangerously sharp surgical scalpel.
"Nobody is ever going to believe a hysterical woman with a documented history of severe mental illness," my mother whispered darkly.
I stepped in front of my daughter to physically shield her from the wealthy monster I used to call mom.
The nurse frantically pulled out her cell phone to dial hospital security for immediate backup.
My mother just laughed a terrifying, hollow laugh that sent chills straight down my spine.

"Go ahead and call them right now, Sarah," my mother challenged smoothly.
"My private holding company quietly bought this entire hospital last week, and every single guard in this building takes their orders strictly from me."
