Chapter 4 - The Fugitive Mother

I stared at the television screen as the news anchor completely destroyed my entire reputation.

David had successfully spun his massive lie to the media, framing me as an insane mother trying to murder her own child.

My face was plastered on every screen in the city, making it impossible for me to ever walk outside in daylight again.

"They are going to hunt you down and lock you away forever," Mark said while locking the heavy metal doors of his clinic.

"I need to leave Elodie here where she is completely safe," I told him, wiping the tears from my exhausted eyes.

I walked into Mark's supply closet and used medical shears to cut my long blonde hair into a jagged, short style.

I dyed my hair pitch black using cheap animal grooming products and covered my face with a dark baseball cap.

I knew the only way to clear my name and save my daughter was to find hard, undeniable evidence of their conspiracy.

I borrowed Mark's old pickup truck and drove straight toward David's private corporate office downtown.

It was three in the morning, meaning the massive glass building was mostly empty except for a few night guards.

I bypassed the security desk by using an old maintenance tunnel I remembered from the building's original construction blueprints.

I sneaked into David's luxurious corner office on the fiftieth floor and frantically searched his mahogany desk.

Behind a large abstract painting on the wall, I discovered a hidden wall safe that required a biometric fingerprint.

I pulled out a clear piece of tape from my pocket that had David's perfectly preserved fingerprint from a water glass he left at home.

I pressed the tape against the scanner, and the heavy metal door clicked open instantly.

Inside the safe, I found a stack of highly illegal offshore bank account ledgers and a massive life insurance policy taken out on Elodie.

The payout for Elodie's tragic death was a staggering fifty million dollars.

But as I read the final page of the policy, my blood ran completely cold.

The primary beneficiary of the multi-million dollar payout was not David or my mother.

The money was secretly destined to go to Nurse Sarah, the woman who had supposedly tried to help me at the hospital.
