Chapter 9 - The Final Countdown

The glowing red digital numbers ticked down relentlessly, bathing the flooded control room in a highly ominous, terrifying glow.

Julian struggled violently against his heavy plastic zip-ties, his dark eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated panic.

"Get out of here immediately, Kiora!" Julian screamed desperately over the howling storm raging outside the broken windows.

Elias rushed forward quickly, pulling a specialized, serrated tactical knife to saw aggressively through Julian's thick bindings.

"Nobody is leaving this doomed rig without you today, Julian," Elias grunted heavily, his massive muscles straining with incredible effort.

Vanessa ran frantically to the explosive control panel, her wet fingers flying rapidly across the complex digital keyboard.

"Marcus maliciously encrypted the detonation sequence with a rolling biometric lock," Vanessa shouted frantically over the noise.

"I simply cannot disarm the C4 explosives from this specific terminal!"

The bright red timer ruthlessly dropped down to exactly forty-five seconds.

Kiora held her crying newborn son incredibly close, her heart hammering wildly against her tired ribs.

"There absolutely has to be a manual override switch somewhere!" Kiora pleaded with absolute, heartbreaking desperation.

Elias finally snapped the very last zip-tie, freeing an exhausted Julian completely from the heavy steel pipe.

Julian immediately pulled Kiora into a tight, incredibly desperate embrace, kissing her salty tears away joyfully.

"The manual override switch is located outside on the exterior catwalk, but it strictly requires a specialized physical key," Julian explained rapidly.

Elias quickly reached deeply into his tactical vest and produced a heavy, intricately carved brass key.

"Your father secretly gave me this exact key five years ago for an absolute emergency exactly like this one," Elias said proudly.

The terrifying timer aggressively dropped down to exactly twenty seconds.

Elias sprinted fiercely toward the heavy exterior hatch, throwing it completely open to the raging, freezing thunderstorm.

He ran dangerously along the highly slippery metal catwalk, fighting valiantly against the relentless hurricane-force winds.

Exactly ten seconds remained on the glowing red digital clock.

Elias aggressively jammed the brass key into the rusted exterior terminal and twisted it fiercely with all his remaining strength.

The bright red timer froze completely and permanently at exactly three seconds.

A collective, massive breath of overwhelming relief beautifully escaped everyone trapped inside the flooded control room.

Julian passionately kissed Kiora again, holding his beautiful, healthy newborn son for the very first time in his life.

But their incredibly joyous reunion was brutally shattered by the terrifying, distinct sound of a slowly cocking pistol.

Vanessa stood rigidly by the control panel, aiming her weapon directly and unforgivingly at Julian's head.
