Chapter 5 - The Glass House Shatters

Clara didn't issue a sterile press release. She didn't hide behind spokespeople. She bought thirty minutes of prime-time air on the biggest financial news network in the country and sat down for a live interview.
She wore a stark white suit, looking like an angel of vengeance under the studio lights. The interviewer, a seasoned veteran known for tearing CEOs apart, leaned forward.
"Ms. Vance, the allegations are severe. The Ledger claims your initial wealth was built on illegal gambling syndicates. How do you respond?"
Clara looked directly into the camera. "I respond with the truth. I survived. When Silas Hawthorne illegally seized my father's assets and drove him to his death, I was left on the street. I counted cards. I played the odds in Macau because the traditional banking system was locked behind the same iron gates that men like Silas Hawthorne built to keep people like me out."
The interviewer blinked, taken aback by the raw, unapologetic honesty.
"I broke rules to survive," Clara continued, her voice rising in power. "But I never stole a pension. I never bankrupted a small business. I never ruined a family. Do you know who did?"
Clara pulled a small black USB drive from her pocket and placed it on the glass desk.
"This drive contains the unredacted ledgers of Hawthorne Enterprises for the last twenty years. It shows how Silas and Julian Hawthorne laundered cartel money through their real estate developments. It shows the judges they bribed and the politicians they bought. They didn't build an empire. They built a criminal syndicate hiding behind bespoke suits and country club memberships."
The studio was dead silent. The producer in the booth frantically scrambled to keep the broadcast live.

"I have already forwarded these files to the Department of Justice," Clara announced. "Julian Hawthorne wanted to talk about my past because he is terrified of his future. The glass house is shattering, Julian. Run."
By the time Clara walked out of the studio, the internet was broken. The narrative completely flipped. Clara wasn't an opportunistic criminal; she was a modern-day Count of Monte Cristo. She was the hero the public desperately wanted. And Julian was a hunted man.
