Chapter 4 - The Smear Campaign

Julian was a cornered rat, and cornered rats fight dirty.

Two weeks into Clara’s reign as CEO, the counter-attack began. Clara walked into her office to find Harrison pacing nervously, holding a freshly printed copy of the New York Ledger.

"FROM ORPHAN TO OPPORTUNIST: THE SHADY PAST OF NEWPORT'S NEWEST BILLIONAIRE."

The headline dominated the front page. Clara picked up the paper, her eyes scanning the text. Julian had hired private investigators to dig through her past. They had found the foster homes. They had found her time working in underground poker rings in Macau to build her initial capital. They spun her story of survival into a narrative of crime, deceit, and manipulation.

"They're alleging you used illegal mob money to fund Obsidian Capital," Harrison said, wiping sweat from his brow. "They have anonymous sources claiming you extorted your way to the top. The SEC is going to want an inquiry. Clara, this is bad. Julian is trying to trigger a morality clause to force a federal freeze on your assets."

Clara stared at the newspaper, her expression unreadable. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling city.

"He thinks he can use the dark parts of my life to scare me," Clara mused, tracing a finger against the glass. "He thinks because he grew up in a mansion, he understands how to fight a war in the gutter."

"What do we do? We need a PR firm to spin this, immediately," Harrison urged.

"No," Clara said, turning around, her eyes flashing with a dangerous brilliance. "We don't spin it. We steer into the skid. If Julian wants to talk about where money comes from, let's talk about it. Harrison, pull up the Blackwood files. It's time to show the world exactly how the Hawthornes built their fortune."

Julian had made a fatal miscalculation. He had brought a knife to a gunfight, assuming Clara was trying to hide her scars. He didn't realize those scars were her armor.
