Chapter 10 - Dawn of the Phoenix

The aftermath was swift and biblical.

Clara and Alexander dragged Julian back to US soil, handing him directly over to the FBI along with the Black Ledger. The evidence was irrefutable.

Within twenty-four hours, federal agents raided the Hawthorne Manor and their corporate offices. Silas Hawthorne was arrested on the golf course, dragged away in handcuffs in front of his elite peers. Julian cracked under interrogation, turning state's evidence against his own father in a desperate, pathetic attempt to reduce his sentence.

The Hawthorne dynasty was annihilated.

Two months later, Clara stood on the sweeping veranda of the Manor—her Manor. The oppressive, toxic energy of the house was gone. She had fired the snobbish staff, replaced the gaudy Murano chandeliers with elegant, modern lighting, and opened the massive French doors to let the fresh ocean breeze sweep through the estate.

She wore a simple, comfortable white linen dress, her bare feet resting on the warm stone patio. She held a framed photograph of her father in her hands.

We did it, Dad, she thought, a tear finally falling freely down her cheek. Your name is clear.

The sound of footsteps on the stone made her turn. Alexander Pierce walked out onto the veranda. He wasn't wearing a bespoke suit today, just dark jeans and a casual sweater. He looked relaxed. Happy.

"The DOJ just released the press statement," Alexander said, handing Clara a cup of coffee. "Silas got twenty-five years to life. Julian got fifteen. It's over."

Clara took the coffee, leaning against the stone balustrade. She looked out at the vast, endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean. "It feels strange. The war is over. I almost don't know what to do with my hands."

Alexander stepped close to her, his shoulder brushing against hers. "I have a few ideas. My company is looking to partner with Obsidian Capital on a new green-energy initiative. We need a ruthless, brilliant CEO to lead the merger."

Clara looked up at him, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her face. The armor was finally off. She wasn't the orphan from Soho anymore, and she wasn't just a weapon forged for revenge. She was Clara Vance, the undisputed queen of Newport.

"I think," Clara said softly, reaching out to take Alexander's hand, "I'm done being ruthless. But brilliant? That I can do."

They stood together on the veranda as the sun began to set, casting a warm, golden glow over the estate. The past was finally buried in the ash, and from it, a new empire was ready to rise.
