Chapter 2 - The Falsified Truth

Avery backed away from the study door, her heart hammering against her ribs.

She had never been unfaithful to Liam, not even in her thoughts.

The DNA test was an absolute, fabricated lie designed to destroy her.

She ran back toward the ballroom, desperate to find her husband.

Liam was standing near the ice sculpture, staring blankly at his empty glass.

Avery grabbed his arm, pulling him into a secluded alcove hidden by floral arrangements.

"Liam, you have to listen to me right now," she pleaded, shaking him gently.

He blinked slowly, his brow furrowing as if he were trying to wake from a deep sleep.

"Avery, what is wrong with you?" he slurred slightly.

"Your mother is drugging you, Liam!" she whispered fiercely.

Liam pulled his arm away, a flash of manufactured anger crossing his face.

"Don't you ever speak about my mother that way," he snapped.

Avery realized Victoria’s poison had taken deep root in his mind.

She could not rely on him until she found the forged documents.

Avery waited until Victoria returned to the ballroom to entertain the governor.

She snuck back down the hallway and slipped into Victoria’s empty study.

The desk drawer was locked, but Avery grabbed a heavy brass letter opener and pried it open.

Inside lay a pristine medical folder bearing the logo of the Sterling private hospital.

Avery opened it and saw the fraudulent DNA results stating Liam had zero genetic match to Leo.

Before she could take a picture with her phone, the heavy study door clicked shut and locked from the outside.
