Chapter 9 - The Ash of an Empire

The fallout was catastrophic and instantaneous.

By the time Vivian made it back to her penthouse, navigating through a swarm of paparazzi and angry protestors, her stock had plummeted by sixty percent. Her board of directors had held an emergency vote over a conference call and formally stripped her of her title as CEO. The federal authorities had already raided her corporate headquarters, seizing servers and freezing her personal assets.

The fortress had crumbled in less than two hours.

Vivian sat on the floor of her luxurious living room, the city lights reflecting in the floor-to-ceiling windows. She poured a glass of scotch with trembling hands. She was ruined. The legacy she had bled for, lied for, and destroyed lives for was gone.

The private elevator pinged. The doors slid open.

Lily walked in, followed by Julian Sterling.

Vivian didn't even have the energy to scream. She just looked at them, taking a slow sip of her drink. "Come to gloat?"

"I came to deliver these," Julian said, tossing a thick stack of legal documents onto the coffee table. "The buyout papers. Vivian Enterprises belongs to Sterling Couture now. I bought your debt, your patents, and your remaining inventory for pennies."

Vivian laughed, a hollow, broken sound. "You think you're a savior, Julian? You're a vulture picking at a carcass."

"I am," Julian agreed effortlessly. "But I'm a vulture with a clear conscience." He turned to Lily. "I’ll wait in the car."

Julian stepped back into the elevator, leaving the two women alone.

Lily looked at the woman who had destroyed her family. Vivian looked old, fragile, and completely devoid of the terrifying aura she had commanded just yesterday.

"You won," Vivian whispered, staring into her glass. "You took everything. My money. My name. My life."

"You took your own life, Vivian," Lily said softly. "The moment you decided that success was worth stepping on the throats of the people who trusted you. My mother idolized you. She thought you were partners."

"In this industry, there are no partners!" Vivian snapped, a brief flash of the old fire returning to her eyes. "There are predators and there is prey! Your mother was weak. She had talent, yes, but she didn't have the stomach for the blood! I took her designs because she would have let them rot in a Brooklyn apartment! I made them immortal!"

"You made them a lie," Lily corrected, her voice resolute. "And a lie always falls apart eventually. It just takes one dropped sequin to unravel the whole dress."

Vivian looked away, the fire dying completely. "What happens to me now?"

"The FBI will be here in the morning," Lily said, turning toward the elevator. "I suggest you call a very good lawyer. You're going to need one."
