Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the PastLily sat in a dimly lit, unassuming coffee shop in Brooklyn, nursing a cold espresso. She watched the rain streak down the window, the grey sky matching the exhaustion in her bones.

She opened her encrypted laptop. The files were secure, backed up in three decentralized locations. She looked at a scanned, yellowed sketch on her screen. It was an intricate, breathtaking design for an evening gown—the exact gown Vivian had worn to the Met Gala five years ago, launching her to global superstardom. At the bottom of the sketch, in elegant cursive, was her mother’s signature: Elena Rossi.
Lily closed her eyes, the memories flooding back. She remembered the tiny, cramped apartment filled with fabric scraps. She remembered her mother coughing, working through the night on a sewing machine, creating miracles out of cheap muslin. And she remembered the day Vivian—then a ruthless, ambitious executive at a rival label—had visited.
Vivian had promised her mother the world. A partnership. A line of her own. Instead, Vivian had taken the portfolios, patented the designs under her own name, and blacklisted Elena in the industry, labeling her a thief and a fraud. Elena’s heart had given out two years later, broken by the betrayal and the crushing weight of poverty.
Lily’s phone buzzed, pulling her from the past. The caller ID was restricted.
"Hello?" Lily answered cautiously.
"You’re playing a dangerous game for a girl with no armor," a smooth, baritone voice echoed through the speaker.
"Who is this?" Lily demanded, her posture stiffening.
"My name is Julian Sterling," the voice replied.
Lily’s breath caught. Julian Sterling was the CEO of Sterling Couture, Vivian’s biggest and most hated rival in the luxury fashion world. He was a billionaire playboy with a reputation for absolute ruthlessness in business.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Lily lied smoothly.
"Please, Ms. Rossi. My security team intercepted the cyber-sweep Vivian’s thugs are currently conducting. They are tearing Manhattan apart looking for your servers. I know you have a kill-switch that can destroy her. I want to help you push the button."

"Why would I trust you?"
"Because we share a common goal," Julian said, his voice dripping with venom. "Vivian ruined my sister’s career five years ago to steal market share. I want her head on a platter. Meet me at the Oak Room in thirty minutes. Bring your laptop. It’s time to level the playing field."
