Chapter 1 - The Tell-Tale StitchThe silence in the VIP lounge was so absolute it felt like a physical weight. The makeup artists, the publicists, the security detail—every single person held their breath, waiting for the inevitable explosion. Vivian’s eyes were locked onto Lily, blazing with a fury that had ended careers for far less.

Lily remained frozen for only a fraction of a second. Then, instead of dropping to her knees in apologies, instead of bursting into tears and begging for her job, she did something that defied all logic of the fashion hierarchy.

She calmly knelt down and picked up the fallen sequin.

She didn't hand it back. She held it up to the harsh, fluorescent vanity light, examining it with an icy, clinical precision that mirrored Vivian’s own.

"You're right, Ms. Vivian," Lily said, her voice dropping the nervous flutter it had held moments before. It was now dead flat. "It is a beautiful gown. The press release says it took three hundred hours of hand-embroidery by master artisans in Milan. A true testament to the Vivian brand's commitment to ethical, elite craftsmanship."

"Are you lecturing me on my own press release, you insolent little nobody?" Vivian hissed, taking a threatening step forward. "Security, get her out of my sight. Make sure she never works in this city again."

The hulking bodyguard by the door shifted, but Lily held up a single finger. The sheer authority in the gesture stopped the man in his tracks.

"I wouldn't do that," Lily said softly. She flipped the tiny, shimmering bead between her thumb and forefinger. "Because if you throw me out, I go straight to the Times. And I tell them to look at the underside of every single sequin on this dress. Right here. Beneath the reflective coating."

Vivian’s perfectly contoured face twitched. "What are you babbling about?"

"It’s a micro-stamp," Lily stated, stepping closer to the fashion icon, the power dynamic in the room violently flipping. "A serial number stamped by an automated pressing machine in a clandestine sweatshop in the garment district of Bangladesh. A factory that you secretly own through three shell companies. This dress wasn't stitched by artisans in Milan, Vivian. It was glued together by exhausted women making two dollars a day in a firetrap. And I have the factory manifests to prove it."

The makeup artists gasped, taking synchronized steps back as if Vivian were suddenly radioactive.

Vivian’s face drained of its golden, spray-tanned warmth, leaving her a sickly, ash-white. The empire she had built was entirely founded on the illusion of ethical, artisanal luxury. If the world knew her masterpiece collection was manufactured in a sweatshop, she wouldn't just be canceled. She would face federal fraud charges and international boycotts.

"Who are you?" Vivian breathed, her voice trembling for the first time in a decade.

Lily smiled—a cold, terrifying expression. "I'm the girl who’s going to hold your train on the red carpet tonight. And you are going to smile at me. Because if you don't, your empire burns before midnight."
