Chapter 4 - The Rat Trap

The blinding white light illuminated every single inch of the cramped alleyway.

"Get out of the car right now!" Evelyn yelled, kicking her door open.

Leo scrambled out of the backseat just as a hail of bullets shattered the sedan's windows.

They dove behind a large industrial dumpster, breathing heavily in the dusty air.

"There are at least six shooters on that roof," Arthur calculated calmly, leaning against the rusty metal.

"We are totally trapped like rats," Leo panicked, gripping his unused pistol tightly.

"There is always a backdoor," Evelyn whispered, pulling a small explosive charge from her tactical vest.

She crawled toward a heavily rusted steel door on the side of the brick warehouse.

"Cover me," she ordered Arthur.

Arthur leaned out from behind the dumpster and fired several precise shots toward the blinding spotlight.

The massive light shattered into a thousand pieces, plunging the alley into temporary darkness.

Evelyn slapped the explosive charge onto the steel door's heavy padlock.

"Fire in the hole!" she shouted, pulling Arthur and Leo down.

A sharp, deafening crack blew the heavy metal door completely off its ancient hinges.

They rushed inside the pitch-black warehouse, coughing through a thick cloud of concrete dust.

Leo stumbled over old wooden pallets as his eyes struggled to adjust to the heavy gloom.

"Keep moving toward the loading docks at the back," Arthur instructed, his breathing growing ragged.

They ran blindly through the massive, echoing structure while heavy footsteps pursued them from outside.

Evelyn suddenly threw her arm out, stopping Leo dead in his tracks.

"Do not move a single muscle," she whispered with extreme urgency.

Leo looked down and saw a faint red laser wire crossing exactly an inch from his shin.

The entire back half of the warehouse floor was rigged with high-grade tripwire explosives.

"Silas knew we would run this way," Arthur realized with a heavy sigh.

Before they could carefully step back, a dark figure stepped out from behind a stack of crates.

It was Silas, holding a remote detonator and pressing a gun directly against Leo's mother's head.
