Chapter 8 - The Setup

The elevator doors slid shut, trapping me in a rising steel box while my mind completely short-circuited.

The security guard on the phone was screaming something about shattered glass and an empty vehicle by the river.

I ended the call, my fingers trembling as I gripped the leather briefcase containing all our evidence.

Julian was gone, and I was about to walk into a boardroom filled with Ethan's loyal executives entirely alone.

The elevator dinged on the top floor, and the heavy mahogany doors opened to reveal the lavish executive lobby.

Ethan was standing by the reception desk, fixing his expensive silk tie and looking incredibly smug.

When he saw me step out of the elevator, his smug smile faltered into genuine confusion.

He stepped into my path, his voice dripping with condescension as he asked how I managed to make bail.

I looked him dead in the eye, channeling every ounce of hatred I had harbored over the last three years.

I told him that the truth had a funny way of finding the light, even when cowards tried to bury it.

Ethan scoffed, leaning in close to whisper that I was completely out of my depth and about to be destroyed.

He warned me that Julian wasn't here to save me, hinting heavily that he knew exactly what had happened to the CEO.

I pushed past him, refusing to let him see the sheer terror threatening to consume my composure.

I walked directly into the grand boardroom and took a seat at the far end of the long glass table.

The board members filed in one by one, giving me confused and hostile glares.

Chloe walked in last, carrying a tray of coffees and wearing a perfectly tailored professional skirt suit.

She set a cup down in front of Ethan, grazing his shoulder with her hand in a sickening display of hidden affection.

Ethan stood up at the head of the table, clearing his throat to call the quarterly meeting to order.

He confidently announced that despite the recent embezzlement crisis, Vance Global was stronger than ever.

He prepared to project the quarterly financials, the exact moment I was supposed to strike.

I opened my briefcase, ready to plug my flash drive into the main terminal and expose them all.

Suddenly, the massive double doors of the boardroom were kicked open with earth-shattering force.

Julian Vance strode into the room, his bespoke suit torn, his forehead bleeding, but his eyes burning with absolute fury.
