Chapter 5 - The Trap

The glowing screen of the burner phone illuminated my face in the dark bathroom.
I read the messages over and over, unable to comprehend the sheer evil of the man I had married.
Ethan wasn't just trying to leave me penniless; he was actively planning to orchestrate a fatal accident.
The hitman had confirmed that the brake line on my SUV would be severed by tomorrow morning.
Panic gripped my throat, but I forced myself to breathe and think logically.
I took out my personal phone and carefully took photos of every single incriminating text message on the burner.
Once I had all the evidence secured, I wiped the burner phone clean of my fingerprints and slipped it back into his jacket downstairs.
I didn't sleep a single wink that night, lying awake next to the man who wanted me dead.
The next morning, Ethan cheerfully offered to make me coffee, acting like the perfect, loving husband.
He casually suggested that I take my SUV into town to pick up some dry cleaning for him.
I smiled warmly, took the coffee cup, and told him I would love to run that errand for him.
As soon as he went upstairs to shower, I grabbed my keys and walked out to the driveway.
But I didn't get into my own car.
Instead, I took the spare keys to Ethan's prized vintage sports car and started the engine.
I drove out of the neighborhood safely, pulling into a busy diner parking lot to meet Julian.
I showed Julian the photos of the text messages, expecting him to call the police immediately.
Julian reviewed the photos with a grim expression, but he slowly shook his head.
He explained that if we brought the police in now, Ethan would just blame the burner phone on Chloe.
We needed concrete proof that tied Ethan directly to the stolen funds and the corporate espionage.
Julian handed me a tiny, state-of-the-art listening device disguised as a pearl earring.
He told me to go back home and leave it in the guest bedroom where Chloe had been staying.
When I returned to the house, I crept up the stairs and carefully planted the bug under the bedside lamp.
Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed my shoulder and spun me around violently.
May you like
Ethan glared down at me, holding the exact same listening device in his fingers.
He coldly asked me if I really thought he was stupid enough not to sweep his own house for bugs.
