Chapter 10 - The Checkmate

The boardroom plunged into absolute chaos as the projection screen flashed bright red and then went completely black.

Chloe stood there with a triumphant, twisted smile, waiting for Julian to panic over the loss of his life's work.

But Julian didn't panic; he simply adjusted his torn cuffs and let out a dry, dismissive chuckle.

He looked at Chloe with pity and informed her that the mainframe she just wiped was a decoy server.

Julian explained that I had secretly migrated all the real corporate data to an encrypted cloud three days ago.

Chloe's smug smile evaporated instantly, replaced by a look of absolute, soul-crushing defeat.

The police swarmed into the boardroom moments later, dragging both a screaming Ethan and a stunned Chloe into the hallway.

As Ethan was hauled past me, he begged for my forgiveness, pleading that we could still fix our marriage.

I didn't say a word; I just turned my back on him and watched the elevator doors close on his pathetic face forever.

Two months later, the divorce was finalized, leaving me with my family's estate fully restored and half of Ethan's liquidated assets.

Ethan was sentenced to twenty years in federal prison for fraud and attempted murder, while Chloe received a similar fate for corporate espionage.

Julian Vance promoted me to the newly vacant Vice President position, rewarding my loyalty and sharp strategic mind.

I was finally free, sitting on the balcony of my new luxury penthouse, sipping a glass of expensive champagne in the warm evening breeze.

Everything was perfectly quiet, peaceful, and exactly how it was supposed to be.

Then, the doorbell rang, shattering the comfortable silence of my new sanctuary.

I walked to the front door and found a small, unmarked black velvet box sitting alone on the welcome mat.

Inside was a photograph of Julian Vance handing a massive, multi-million dollar check to Chloe, dated from exactly three years ago.

A handwritten note attached to the back read, "Did you really think you won the game, Mabel, or were you just his favorite pawn?"
