Chapter 5 - The Lethal Dose

Carla threw the folder back into the drawer and dove under the massive desk.
The office door swung open, revealing Dean and Doctor Hale deep in conversation.
"The timeline has changed," Dean announced sharply, pacing across the room.
Doctor Hale nervously adjusted his glasses and asked what the new plan was.
"Give him the lethal injection tonight instead of tomorrow," Dean commanded.
The doctor stammered, arguing that a sudden heart attack would look too suspicious before the wedding.
Dean grabbed the doctor by the collar, slamming him against the wall right above Carla's head.
"You will do it tonight, or I will bury you next to him," Dean hissed violently.
Doctor Hale nodded frantically, promising to administer the fatal drug at midnight.
The two men left the office, shutting the door loudly behind them.
Carla scrambled out from under the desk, her knees trembling uncontrollably.
She grabbed the stolen revolver and sprinted back to Massimo's bedroom.
She burst through the door, tears streaming down her pale face.
"They are coming to kill you tonight at midnight," she cried, handing him the heavy weapon.
Massimo checked the cylinder, finding six hollow-point bullets ready to fire.
He looked at the digital clock on his nightstand, which glowed ominously at eleven-thirty.
He ordered Carla to wake Nina up, pack a small bag, and escape through the kitchen delivery door.
Carla stubbornly refused, swearing she would not leave him to die alone.
Massimo raised his voice, demanding she protect her daughter first.
Before Carla could argue again, heavy footsteps echoed outside the bedroom door.
The brass handle slowly turned as a key slid into the lock.
Massimo frantically shoved the revolver beneath his thick blanket.

He threw himself back into his pillows, pretending to be deeply asleep.
The door creaked open, and Doctor Hale stepped into the dark room holding a massive syringe.
