Chapter 4 - The Stolen Weapon

Carla pressed her back against the cold brick wall, completely paralyzed by fear.

She could hear the crunch of Dean's expensive leather shoes on the gravel pathway.

He was less than ten feet away from her hiding spot.

She closed her eyes tightly and prayed that Nina would be safe if she died today.

Suddenly, a large stray cat leaped aggressively out of the neighboring bushes, hissing loudly.

The cat darted across the pathway right in front of Dean's feet.

Dean sighed in annoyance, lowering his weapon and slipping it back into his holster.

"It was just a filthy animal," Dean muttered, turning back to Camille.

Carla waited until their footsteps completely faded away before she finally exhaled.

She ran straight back to Massimo's private quarters, locking the door behind her.

She relayed the entire terrifying conversation to Massimo, her voice shaking violently.

Massimo's jaw tightened in fury, knowing he only had twenty-four hours before they murdered him.

His legs were getting stronger, but he could not outrun a team of armed guards yet.

"I need a weapon, Carla," Massimo said, his eyes burning with dark intensity.

He instructed her to sneak into Dean's private office while he was occupied with the evening meeting.

Carla waited until nine o'clock, creeping down the darkened hallway like a ghost.

She successfully picked the lock on Dean's office door using a hairpin, a trick her late husband had taught her.

She quietly opened the bottom drawer of the mahogany desk and found a loaded revolver.

She tucked the heavy gun into the waistband of her apron.

Before closing the drawer, she noticed a bright red folder with her own name printed on the tab.

Curiosity overcame her fear, and she opened the file to read the first page.

Her heart completely stopped beating as she read the terrifying contents.

The brass doorknob suddenly clicked and began to turn from the outside.
