Chapter 9 - The Final Sacrifice

Liam laughed, a manic, hysterical sound that echoed off the high metal ceilings of the warehouse.

You think you are a hero, Cole? Liam spat, tightening his grip on Marina's throat.

I think you are a coward who hides behind women, Adrien replied, taking another slow step forward.

Liam shifted his gun, aiming it directly at Adrien's wounded chest.

Say goodbye to your empire, Adrien, Liam sneered, his finger pulling back on the trigger.

Marina did not wait for the gunshot.

She reached into the pocket of her oversized white shirt and pulled out the small tactical knife Adrien had given her.

She drove the blade deep into Liam's thigh with every ounce of strength she possessed.

Liam screamed in agony, his grip completely releasing as his leg buckled beneath him.

Marina broke free and threw herself aggressively onto the hard concrete floor.

A deafening barrage of gunfire erupted from the catwalks, completely drowning out Liam's screams.

Marina covered her head, squeezing her eyes shut until the echoing thunder finally stopped.

When she opened her eyes, Liam was lying motionless on the floor, his coup permanently ended.

She looked up frantically, searching through the gun smoke for Adrien.

Adrien was lying on his back near the duffel bag, a fresh circle of crimson blooming across his chest.

Marina scrambled across the floor, sliding to her knees beside the fallen mafia boss.

No, no, stay with me! she cried, pressing both of her hands tightly against his bleeding wound.

Adrien looked up at her, a faint, peaceful smile touching his lips as his breathing slowed.

You are safe now, Marina, he whispered, his eyes slowly fluttering shut.

Adrien! Marina screamed, her voice breaking as she desperately started chest compressions.

Victor rushed out from the shadows, yelling for his medical team to bring the trauma kit immediately.

Marina pumped her hands against Adrien's chest, tears blurring her vision as she refused to let him die.

Come back to me! she sobbed, pressing her mouth to his to force air into his failing lungs.

May you like

The paramedics finally pulled her away, loading Adrien onto a stretcher and rushing him toward a waiting ambulance.

Marina stood in the empty warehouse, covered in blood, staring at the flashing red lights fading into the night.
