Chapter 1 - The First Cry

The first sound was barely a whimper.

Marina froze in place, the heavy silver wine tray trembling slightly in her hands.

She prayed to any god listening that it was just a phantom noise created by her own terrified mind.

But then Noah shifted against her chest, the movement stretching the fabric of the oversized white button-down shirt.

A second cry escaped, louder this time, cutting through the low murmur of the dining room.

Every single man at the massive mahogany table stopped talking instantly.

The silence that followed was heavier and more suffocating than the loudest explosion.

Chairs scraped violently against the hardwood floor as five of the guests stood up.

In perfect, terrifying synchronization, five suppressed handguns were drawn and aimed directly at Marina.

She could not breathe, her heart hammering so hard she thought her ribs might crack.

Adrien Cole did not stand up.

He did not draw a weapon.

He slowly raised his right hand, a silent command that froze his men in place.

Adrien stood up from the head of the table, his dark eyes fixed on the trembling server.

He walked toward her with slow, deliberate steps, moving like a predator circling a trapped deer.

Marina squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for a bullet, but instead, she felt large, warm hands gently parting her oversized shirt.

Noah was screaming now, his tiny face red with frustration and fear.

Adrien looked down at the infant strapped to her chest.

He reached out, his long, scarred fingers lightly touching the baby's cheek.

The impossible happened in a fraction of a second.

Noah stopped crying instantly, his wide blue eyes locking onto the dangerous mafia boss.

The baby let out a soft coo, reaching out with both tiny fists to grab the lapel of Adrien's custom Italian suit.

Noah gripped the expensive fabric and refused to let go.

Adrien stared at the baby, a strange, unrecognizable emotion flashing across his usually stoic face.

He gently brushed the collar of Noah's shirt aside, revealing a small, crescent-shaped birthmark on the baby's neck.

Adrien's eyes widened slightly, his entire demeanor shifting from calm curiosity to lethal intensity.

He looked up at his men, his voice echoing through the silent room like thunder.

Lock every door in this mansion right now, because this woman and this child are not leaving.
