Chapter 2 - The Hidden Truth

Marina stumbled backward, her hands instinctively wrapping around Noah to protect him.
She hit the wall behind her, realizing there was absolutely nowhere to run.
The heavy oak doors of the dining room were slammed shut and locked by the armed guards.
Adrien gently pried Noah's tiny fingers off his jacket, his touch surprisingly tender for a man who ruled the criminal underworld.
He turned to his guests, dismissing them with a single, sharp nod.
The men holstered their weapons and quickly filed out through a side door, leaving Marina entirely alone with the boss.
Adrien pulled out a chair from the dining table and gestured for her to sit.
Marina collapsed into the velvet seat, her legs completely unable to support her weight anymore.
Who sent you? Adrien asked, his voice low and dangerously calm.
Nobody sent me, I swear to God, Marina pleaded, tears spilling hot and fast down her cheeks.
I was facing eviction, the agency called, and my babysitter canceled at the last minute.
Adrien poured a glass of water from a crystal pitcher and slid it across the table toward her.
I do not believe in coincidences, Marina, he said, using her name for the very first time.
He leaned across the table, his dark eyes analyzing every inch of her terrified face.
That birthmark on your son's neck is a genetic trait specific to the Rossi bloodline.
Marina gasped, shaking her head in desperate confusion.
His father's name was Liam Holtz, he was a bartender, not a mobster.
Liam died in a car crash three months before Noah was born.
Adrien pulled his phone from his pocket, tapping the screen a few times before sliding it over to her.
The screen displayed a surveillance photo of a man Marina recognized instantly.
It was Liam, but he was wearing a tailored suit, standing next to a man Adrien identified as a rival syndicate boss.
Liam Holtz was a ghost identity created by Lorenzo Rossi, my greatest enemy, Adrien explained coldly.
Marina felt the room spinning as the reality of her entire life fractured into pieces.
Before she could process the lie of her dead boyfriend, Adrien reached across the table and grabbed the edge of the baby sling.
He pulled a small, blinking metallic device from the inner lining of the fabric.

It was a military-grade GPS tracker, and its red light was flashing faster with every passing second.
They are already here, Adrien whispered, pulling his gun from his shoulder holster.
