Chapter 3 - The Siege

The deafening sound of an explosion rocked the entire foundation of the mansion.

Crystal glasses shattered on the dining table, raining sharp shards across the floor.

Marina screamed, curling her body entirely over Noah to shield him from the flying debris.

Adrien grabbed her arm, his grip like a steel vice, and hauled her to her feet.

We have exactly two minutes before they breach this room, he yelled over the blaring security alarms.

He dragged her toward the large, ornate fireplace at the far end of the dining room.

Adrien reached beneath the marble mantle and pressed a hidden sequence of decorative stones.

The fireplace groaned loudly before sliding to the left, revealing a dark, narrow corridor hidden inside the walls.

Get in, now! he commanded, shoving her gently but firmly into the darkness.

He stepped in right behind her, hitting a button that slammed the secret door shut just as the main dining room doors were blown off their hinges.

Marina stood in the pitch-black tunnel, her chest heaving as she tried to keep Noah perfectly quiet.

Adrien clicked on a tactical flashlight, the narrow beam cutting through the thick dust of the passageway.

Follow me, and do not make a single sound, he instructed, leading the way down a steep flight of concrete stairs.

They descended deep into the earth, the sounds of gunfire above them growing muffled and distant.

At the bottom of the stairs, Adrien unlocked a heavy steel door that led into a state-of-the-art panic room.

The room was illuminated by the glow of dozens of security monitors showing every angle of the mansion.

Marina gasped as she looked at the screens, watching armed mercenaries sweeping through the luxurious hallways.

Adrien typed a rapid command into the main console, switching the feed to the front gates.

His face drained of color as he watched the footage.

Marina looked closer, recognizing the man leading the heavily armed hit squad.

It was the head steward, the same man who had threatened her when she first arrived at the mansion.

He did not just betray me, Adrien whispered, pointing to the corner of the screen.

Standing right next to the traitorous steward, holding a submachine gun and looking very much alive, was Liam.
