Chapter 8 - The Wire

The room spun violently as the hitman's words echoed in my ears.
My mother had not just wanted me dead to steal my company.
She had specifically ordered the murder of her own infant grandchildren to ensure there were no other heirs to the estate.
There was no limit to the darkness inside that woman.
"We have enough to go to the police," Daniel said, looking absolutely sickened.
"No," I replied, gripping my cane until my knuckles turned white.
"Vance said the local police chief is on her payroll."
"If we hand Marcus over, they will just release him and tip her off."
I needed an undeniable confession, recorded straight from the source.
I instructed Daniel to release the hitman with a stern warning to disappear from the city forever.
Then, I picked up my phone and unblocked my mother's number.
She answered on the first ring, her voice dripping with fake concern.
"Mara, darling, I have been so worried about you," she lied effortlessly.
"I am ready to negotiate the eviction," I told her, keeping my voice carefully neutral.
"Meet me at the botanical gardens in one hour, and come alone."
I dressed in a thick sweater to conceal the high-tech listening device Vance taped to my chest.
My security team spread out through the gardens, blending in with the tourists.
I sat on a wooden bench near the orchid greenhouse, waiting.
My mother arrived wearing a designer trench coat and a smug smile.
"I knew you would finally come to your senses," she said, sitting beside me.
"I know about the hitman, Mom," I said quietly, cutting straight to the point.
Her smile faltered for a fraction of a second before returning.
"I have no idea what you are talking about," she scoffed.
"Marcus confessed everything," I pushed.
"He told me you paid him fifty thousand dollars to run my car off the road and kill my children."
My mother looked around the empty pathway, confident we were entirely alone.
She let out a cruel, chilling laugh.
"Marcus always was a loose end," she whispered maliciously.
"You should have just died in the crash, Mara."
"Greg was going to give me everything, but then you survived and ruined the plan."
"You killed Greg, and then you tried to kill me," I stated, ensuring the microphone picked up every word.
"And I will try again if you do not sign the company over to me today," she threatened.
I stood up from the bench, a triumphant smile spreading across my face.
"That is all I needed to hear," I said.
Suddenly, three uniformed police officers stepped out from behind the greenhouse doors.

The corrupt police chief walked right past my mother and grabbed my arms.
"Mara Vance, you are under arrest for the extortion and harassment of your mother," the chief announced.
