Chapter 10 - The Resurrection

I stepped out of the private elevator and into the quiet sanctuary of my penthouse.

The evening city skyline glittered brightly through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows.

I walked into the nursery and smiled at the peaceful sight of my babies sleeping soundly in their cribs.

Noah and Lily were finally safe from the toxic monsters who shared their bloodline.

I gently pulled their blankets up and quietly closed the nursery door.

I walked into the kitchen and poured myself a large glass of expensive red wine.

My pelvis barely ached anymore, and the heavy burden of my family had been completely lifted.

The news stations on the television were completely dominated by the arrests of my mother and sister.

The federal authorities had successfully frozen the offshore Cayman Islands trust.

Every cent of my hard-earned money was legally secured back in my name.

I sat down on my plush velvet sofa, taking a deep, satisfied sip of my wine.

The nightmare that began with shrieking metal on the highway was finally over.

Suddenly, the high-tech security panel by the front door let out a sharp, electronic chirp.

The heavy reinforced deadbolt automatically slid back with a loud clack.

I froze, my hand hovering over the panic button hidden beneath the sofa cushion.

The security system was coded exclusively to my biometric fingerprint.

Nobody else on earth had the authority to unlock that door from the outside.

The lights in the penthouse suddenly flickered and completely died, plunging the room into darkness.

The heavy oak door slowly creaked open, letting in a cold draft from the hallway.

A tall silhouette of a man stepped gracefully into the moonlight spilling through the windows.

He reached up and casually flipped the wall switch, restoring the lights to the room.

I dropped my wine glass, watching it shatter into a hundred pieces on the hardwood floor.

Standing in my living room, looking perfectly healthy and immaculately dressed, was my husband Greg.

The same man I had buried in a sealed casket over a year ago.

He offered me a warm, familiar smile that chilled me to the bone.

"You always were entirely too smart for your own good, Mara," Greg said softly.

He reached into his tailored jacket and pulled out a suppressed handgun.

"Thank you for getting rid of your mother for me, but I will be taking my company back now."
