Chapter 3 - The Eviction

Claire dropped the papers onto the floor and ran out of the hospital room in a panic.

I leaned back against my pillows and let out a long, exhausted breath.

Daniel picked up the documents and placed them neatly on my bedside table.

"Your sister took out a quarter of a million dollars in illegal loans," Daniel explained.

"She used your company as collateral without your authorization."

I closed my eyes as a fresh wave of pain radiated through my fractured pelvis.

My family was not just greedy, they were actively destroying my life.

"I want them out of the house, Daniel," I said firmly.

"Serve my parents with a formal thirty-day eviction notice this afternoon."

Daniel nodded and immediately began drafting the order on his tablet.

Less than two hours later, my parents stormed into the hospital ward.

My mother clutched the legal eviction notice in her trembling fist.

My father trailed behind her, looking unusually pale and nervous.

"How dare you do this to us after everything we have done for you!" my mother shrieked.

"You are throwing your own flesh and blood onto the street over a silly misunderstanding."

I stared at the woman who had birthed me, feeling absolutely nothing but contempt.

"You chose a pickleball game over your own grandchildren," I reminded her.

My father stepped forward and tried to put on a diplomatic smile.

"Mara, sweetheart, your mother was just stressed yesterday," he coaxed.

"Cancel this eviction nonsense and turn the accounts back on so we can be a family again."

I looked at his designer watch, which I had paid for last Christmas.

"The free ride is over," I told them with finality.

"You have thirty days to pack your things and vacate my property."

My mother stepped furiously toward the bed, raising her hand as if she might strike me.

Daniel stepped out from the shadows of the corner and cleared his throat loudly.

My parents froze, suddenly realizing I was not alone.

"If you do not leave this hospital immediately, I will have you arrested for trespassing," Daniel warned.

My mother glared at me with absolute hatred before turning on her heel.

"You are dead to us, Mara," she spat as she dragged my father out of the room.

The room finally fell silent, and I felt a massive weight lift from my shoulders.

I was finally free from their endless demands and emotional manipulation.

Suddenly, Daniel's phone began to emit a loud, piercing alarm.

He checked the screen and his professional composure completely cracked.

"Mara, someone just bypassed the firewall on your late husband's life insurance trust," Daniel said frantically.

"They are currently draining the entire five million dollar account."
