Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs

Elena was shoved into Arthur’s study. The ledgers they had stolen from the safe were sitting on his desk.

Arthur was waiting, holding a silver-plated revolver.

"Did you really think a kitchen rat and my disappointing bastard could outsmart me in my own house?" Arthur sneered.

He pointed the gun at Elena’s chest. "I built this empire with blood. I will not let you take it from me."

"You killed my mother," Elena said, her voice shaking but her chin held high. "You burned her alive for money. The press will know everything tomorrow."

"The press will know nothing," Arthur laughed. "Because tomorrow morning, the headline will read: Tragic Fire Claims the Life of Sterling Heiress... Again."

He motioned to his guards. They grabbed Elena, dragging her kicking and screaming down into the wine cellar. They threw her inside and locked the heavy iron door.

Elena banged on the metal, screaming for help. Through the narrow grate, she saw the guards pouring gasoline over the wooden wine racks outside the door.

Arthur walked up to the grate, lighting a match. "Goodbye, Evangeline. Tell your mother I said hello."

He dropped the match. The flames erupted instantly, a roaring wave of orange heat that began to lick at the iron door. The smoke rapidly filled the cellar. Elena fell to the floor, coughing, her eyes burning. This was how she was meant to die twenty years ago. The past had finally caught up to her.
