Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The string quartet was playing a frantic Vivaldi piece, but to Elena, the world had gone completely silent.

Sebastian Sterling, the billionaire heir and the city’s most eligible bachelor, had stopped dead in the center of the mahogany dance floor. His stormy grey eyes, usually heavy with aristocratic boredom, were locked entirely on her.

Elena tried to shrink back into the shadows of the alcove, pulling at the stiff collar of her grey uniform. But in her panic, the top button snapped. The coarse fabric fell open, exposing her collarbone and the distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark resting just above her heart.

Sebastian didn’t just look at her. He marched toward her.

The crowd parted for him like the Red Sea. Whispers erupted among the socialites as Sebastian closed the distance, his tailored Tom Ford tuxedo absorbing the harsh light of the chandelier. He stopped inches from Elena, invading her space, his breathing ragged.

"Look at me," he commanded, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that sent a shiver down her spine.

Elena slowly raised her head, her brown eyes meeting his piercing grey ones.

Slowly, Sebastian reached out. His warm fingers brushed against her cold skin, tracing the outline of the crescent birthmark. A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. At the head table, the Sterling patriarch, Arthur Sterling, dropped his crystal champagne flute. It shattered against the marble floor—a sound like a gunshot.

"It’s you," Sebastian whispered, loud enough for the microphone near the orchestra to catch it. "You didn't die in the fire."

He turned to the stunned crowd, his eyes locking onto his pale, trembling father. "Ladies and gentlemen," Sebastian announced, his voice ringing with lethal clarity. "Allow me to introduce the true heir to the Sterling empire. My older sister, Evangeline."

The ballroom erupted into pure chaos.
