Chapter 10 - The New Empire

Six months later.
The summer heat was beating down on the financial district again, but the atmosphere had entirely changed. The Vance Syndicate logo had been stripped from the skyline, replaced by the sleek, minimalist crest of Thorne Industries.
Toby stood in the glass elevator, ascending to the top floor of his newly renovated headquarters. He was reviewing a digital tablet, looking over the latest quarterly reports. The company had pivoted aggressively. Under Toby’s leadership, they had dismantled Vance’s predatory housing schemes, converting three major luxury developments into affordable, high-quality urban housing for the city's working class.
The elevator doors chimed and slid open, revealing a sprawling, sunlit penthouse office. His assistant, a sharp young woman named Elena, walked up to him with a fresh cup of coffee.
"Good morning, Mr. Thorne," Elena smiled. "The mayor is calling at ten to thank you for the urban renewal grant. And we received an update from the state penitentiary regarding the Vance case."
Toby took a sip of his coffee, his expression unreadable. "Oh?"
"Marcus Vance's appeal was denied by the supreme court this morning," Elena reported. "He'll be serving the full twenty-five-year sentence without the possibility of early parole."

Toby walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the bustling streets below. The cars looked like tiny metal insects from this height. He thought back to the dark, oppressive parking garage where Marcus had tried to make him kneel. The world really did cost a lot more than Marcus had realized, and the bill had finally come due.
"File the report away, Elena," Toby said, turning back to his desk, ready to build a legacy that actually mattered. "That chapter is closed. We have a city to rebuild."
