Chapter 2 - The Sapphire Setup

Three days later, the tension in the manor was palpable. Victoria found herself continuously finding excuses to observe the new maid. She watched Elena gracefully handle the most grueling tasks, never complaining, always carrying a quiet dignity that wealth couldn't buy.

Isabelle, however, was losing her patience. She noticed her mother’s distracted gazes. Isabelle was used to being the absolute center of Victoria’s universe, and the presence of this peasant girl was an intolerable distraction.

On a rainy Tuesday, the house was thrown into chaos.

"My sapphire bracelet is gone!" Isabelle shrieked, storming into the main drawing room where Victoria was reviewing contracts. "The one Grandmother left me. It was on my vanity this morning, and now it’s gone!"

Victoria sighed, rubbing her temples. "Isabelle, calm down. It is likely misplaced."

"It is not misplaced!" Isabelle pointed a manicured finger toward the hallway. "She was the last one to clean my suite. The ratty new girl. Elena."

Within minutes, the head of security had dragged Elena into the drawing room. Elena looked terrified but stood straight, refusing to cower.

"Empty your pockets," Isabelle hissed.

"I didn't take anything," Elena said, her voice shaking but firm.

"Empty them!"

Elena reached into the pockets of her gray uniform apron. Her hands pulled out a lint roller, a spare rag, and—with a horrifying clatter—a glittering sapphire bracelet dropped onto the hardwood floor.

Elena gasped, staring at the jewels. "I... I swear on my life, I have never seen that before. I didn't put it there!"

Isabelle smiled triumphantly. "Thief. Mother, call the police immediately. I want her locked up."

Victoria stood up slowly. She looked at the bracelet, then at Isabelle's smug face, and finally at Elena's desperate, honest eyes. Victoria had spent forty years reading liars in boardrooms. She knew what guilt looked like. And Elena was entirely innocent.

"Security," Victoria said coldly. "Release the girl."

"Mother!" Isabelle gasped. "She stole from us!"

"The bracelet has an intricate clasp, Isabelle," Victoria noted, her voice dangerously low. "It requires two hands to fasten and unfasten. If it was on your vanity, how did it end up perfectly clasped inside a pocket? Someone planted it." Victoria locked eyes with her daughter. "And I despise games under my roof."

Isabelle turned pale.

Victoria turned to Elena. "Go back to your quarters, Elena. You are not fired."

As Elena bowed her head in gratitude, a single, dark strand of her hair caught on the golden button of her uniform and drifted to the floor. Victoria waited until everyone left the room. Then, she knelt down and carefully picked it up.
