Chapter 1 - The Echo in the Hallway

The interior of the Sterling Manor was as unforgiving as the storm outside. Everything was marble, gold, and cold. Elena’s first assignment was to polish the grand staircase, a sprawling spiral of white stone that seemed to reach into the heavens.

She scrubbed in silence, the rhythm of her breathing matching the sweeping motion of her cloth. She tried to remain invisible, a skill she had perfected over years of navigating a world that demanded everything and gave nothing.

"Watch where you’re kneeling, new girl."

Elena looked up. Standing a few steps above her was Isabelle Sterling. She was the picture of inherited perfection—flawless blonde hair, designer silk loungewear, and a sneer that twisted her beautiful features into something ugly.

"I'm sorry, Miss," Elena said softly, shifting her bucket to the side.

Isabelle didn't move. She stared down at Elena, her eyes narrowing. There was an instantaneous, venomous dislike in Isabelle's gaze, as if she recognized a threat she couldn't quite name. "My mother is hosting a board dinner tonight. I don't want to see you lingering in the corridors. Stick to the shadows. It’s where you belong."

Elena bit the inside of her cheek until she tasted copper. "Understood."

As Isabelle sashayed away, the heavy oak doors at the top of the landing swung open. Victoria Sterling stepped out. She was speaking rapidly in French on a sleek cell phone, her tone sharp enough to cut glass.

Elena scrambled to her feet, backing against the wall to let the matriarch pass. But as Victoria descended, she suddenly froze. The phone slipped slightly from her ear.

Victoria stared at the new maid. Elena’s dark, expressive eyes, the sharp curve of her jawline, and the defiant set of her shoulders—it was like looking into a temporal mirror. A jolt of electricity shot through Victoria’s chest. For a fleeting second, she wasn't the Empress of Commerce. She was twenty-two again, staring at her own reflection on the day she built her first company.

"Who are you?" Victoria demanded, her voice barely a whisper.

"Elena, ma'am. Elena Hayes. I'm the new domestic staff."

May you like

Victoria couldn't breathe. The hollow ache she had felt for twenty-five years flared into a blinding pain. "Elena," she repeated, testing the name on her tongue. It felt terrifyingly familiar. "Get back to work."

She hurried down the stairs, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
