Chapter 5 - The Ghost Signature

Cole stared down the barrel of her gun without blinking a single time.

He absolutely refused to accept the horrifying accusation she had just thrown at him.

He calmly told her that he loved his father more than anything in this ruthless world.

Eleanor pulled a folded, heavily burned document from a waterproof pocket hidden in her dress.

She threw the paper onto his lap while keeping the gun completely steady.

Cole opened the document and recognized the official Mercer assassination authorization form.

At the very bottom of the page was his own distinct, undeniable signature.

He traced the ink with a trembling finger, his heart pounding violently against his ribs.

He looked up at Eleanor and swore on his life that he had never signed this paper.

Eleanor searched his eyes for any sign of deception, her finger resting lightly on the trigger.

Cole suddenly realized exactly how the impossible forgery had been accomplished.

He explained that three years ago, he had been hospitalized for a week with a severe fever.

Grant had been in charge of all corporate and syndicate paperwork during that exact timeframe.

Grant had used Cole's automatic signature stamp to authorize the murder of his own father.

Eleanor slowly lowered the weapon, realizing Grant had successfully manipulated both of them.
