Chapter 2 - The Audit of Blood

Cole felt a sudden, violent shift in the reality he thought he controlled.
The nickname belonged to a legendary syndicate auditor who erased entire crime families.
Grant took a staggering step backward, his face draining of all color.
He pointed a shaking finger at Eleanor and accused her of being a federal spy.
Eleanor slowly turned her terrifying gaze toward the man who had bet five thousand dollars on her humiliation.
She softly informed Grant that federal agents cared about laws, whereas she only cared about ledgers.
She reached into her sleek designer clutch and pulled out a single silver flash drive.
She tossed it onto the cocktail table directly between Cole and his cousin.
Eleanor announced that the drive contained proof of exactly who had been embezzling from the Mercer empire.
She had spent three years sitting quietly at her desk, tracking every stolen penny.
Cole glared at his cousin, realizing Grant had been bleeding his company dry from the inside out.
Grant pulled a concealed pistol from his tuxedo jacket in a blind panic.
He aimed the weapon directly at Eleanor's chest.
Cole lunged forward to protect his secretary, completely abandoning his cold facade.

Before Cole could reach her, a waiter in the crowd suddenly drew a suppressed submachine gun.
The waiter did not aim at Grant, but pointed the lethal weapon straight at Cole's head.
