Chapter 6 - The Midnight Surgeon

Victoria gasped in absolute terror as the cold steel pressed against her skin.
The underground surgeon warned her not to make a single sound.
Marcus was still downstairs, completely unaware of the sudden betrayal in the bedroom.
Hannah watched through the ventilation grate, completely shocked by the sudden turn of events.
The surgeon slowly pulled down his blue medical mask to reveal his face.
It was Doctor Evans, the very same pediatrician who had falsely pronounced Leo dead three years ago.
Victoria trembled, asking him what he thought he was doing.
Doctor Evans angrily explained that Marcus had secretly planned to kill him to tie up loose ends.
He had found a hitman's contract with his name on it hidden in Marcus's private files.
He refused to take the fall for a conspiracy that he had been forced into.
Leo sat quietly on the bed, watching the adults with wide, observant eyes.
Doctor Evans demanded that Victoria transfer five million dollars to his account immediately.
If she refused, he promised to walk out the front door and hand the boy over to the FBI.
Hannah knew she had to take advantage of this chaotic distraction.
She kicked the metal grate out of the wall, sending it crashing onto the bedroom floor.
She dropped down into the room and immediately grabbed a heavy bronze lamp.
Before Doctor Evans could react to the noise, Hannah swung the lamp with all her strength.
It struck the corrupt doctor in the head, knocking him completely unconscious.
Victoria lunged toward the bedroom door to scream for Marcus's help.
Hannah tackled her to the floor, pinning her down fiercely.
She tied the struggling stepmother up with the heavy silk cords from the window drapes.
Hannah rushed over to the bed and hugged her brave little nephew tightly.
She whispered that they were going to climb back out through the vents.
Suddenly, the bedroom door handle began to rattle violently from the outside.

Marcus’s voice echoed aggressively through the thick wood.
"I smell the betrayal in the air," Marcus shouted as he kicked the door completely off its hinges.
