Chapter 5 - The Checkmate Protocol

Arthur sat in the dimly lit hotel bar, nursing a scotch. His phone had been ringing incessantly for forty-eight hours. The media wanted a statement. Genevieve wanted to talk. His mother was silent.

A shadow fell over his table. He looked up to see Genevieve, wearing a trench coat and dark sunglasses. She slid into the booth across from him.

"Arthur, you have to listen to me," she pleaded, reaching for his hand. "Your mother is going to federal prison. The board is going to strip the family of all assets. If you sign proxy control to me right now, I can shield your inheritance in a blind trust."

Arthur stared at her. The fog of his lifelong anxiety was lifting, replaced by a cold, terrifying clarity. He pulled his hand away.

"I had an independent auditor look at the black folder my mother brought to the meeting," Arthur said quietly. "It wasn't fabricated, Genevieve. You owe the Sokolov syndicate two billion dollars. You married me to save your own life."

Genevieve froze. The tender, loving wife vanished, replaced by a desperate, feral predator. "If I go down, Arthur, I am taking the Vanguard name with me. I will testify that you authorized the bribes. You will rot in a cell next to your mother."

Before Arthur could respond, a heavy, familiar voice echoed behind them.

"No, he won't," Victoria said, stepping out of the shadows of the bar, flanked by Elias and two federal agents.
