Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Pen

The next morning, the Vanguard Enterprises boardroom, perched eighty stories above the city, was a temple of glass and steel. Arthur sat at the head of the long mahogany table, looking uncomfortable in his bespoke suit. Genevieve sat to his right, her posture immaculate, a shark circling a life raft.
"The acquisition of Sterling Media is finalized," Genevieve announced to the board of directors. "Arthur simply needs to sign the proxy authorization, granting my holding company the operational control."
Arthur picked up his gold fountain pen. "It makes sense," he told the board, repeating the lines his wife had drilled into him all night. "Genevieve has the media background. I trust her."
He moved the pen toward the thick stack of legal paper.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors swung open. Victoria Vanguard walked in. She wasn't wearing a blazer; she wore a sweeping, tailored cape of midnight blue. She commanded the room without saying a word.
"Put the pen down, Arthur," Victoria commanded.
Genevieve stood up, her eyes flashing. "Victoria, you don't have operational authority in this meeting. Arthur is the CEO."

"Arthur holds the title, but I hold the leverage," Victoria said smoothly, tossing a thick black folder onto the center of the table. "I suggest the board reviews page four. The holding company Genevieve is trying to merge with us? It carries two billion dollars in toxic debt from a failed European tech venture. She isn't trying to expand our empire. She is trying to use our capital to pay off her Russian creditors."
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Arthur dropped the pen, looking at Genevieve in horror.
