Chapter 7 - The Inside Man

Tessa froze on the floor, the heavy revolver shaking in her grip.

“Luca, thank God.”

She lowered the weapon slightly.

“Leo is trapped in the elevator, we have to help my father.”

Luca did not lower his rifle.

His face was devoid of the friendly warmth he usually showed her in the kitchen.

“Put the gun down, Tessa.”

“What are you doing?”

“I am doing my actual job.”

Luca stepped forward and kicked the revolver out of her hand.

He grabbed her by the arm and hauled her roughly to her feet.

“You think the agency placed you here by accident?”

Tessa stared at him in complete confusion.

“Your father owed the Chicago syndicate four million dollars in gambling debts before his stroke.”

Luca pulled a heavy zip tie from his tactical vest and bound her wrists together.

“Greg is my boss.”

“We placed you here to map the security of the estate.”

Tessa realized she had never been a ghost; she had been a pawn in a game she did not know existed.

Luca pulled out his radio.

“Greg, I have the girl in the library.”

“Bring her out the back.”

Luca shoved her toward the shattered French doors leading to the gardens.

Before they could take a single step, the heavy mahogany doors of the library locked from the outside with a loud metallic clank.

Thick, acrid gray smoke began pouring into the room through the ventilation shafts.
