Chapter 6 - The Maid's Rebellion

Tessa stared into the darkness where Leo’s face should be.

“You just killed him.”

“I just kept you alive.”

“He is my father!”

Tessa threw herself at him, her fists slamming blindly against his chest.

She did not care that he was a mafia boss.

She did not care that he was twice her size.

Leo grunted as she hit his wounded shoulder, but he did not strike her back.

He grabbed her wrists, pinning them against the steel wall of the elevator.

“Listen to me, Tessa, they will kill you the second you step out of this box.”

“I do not care about me.”

She thrashed against his grip, completely feral with grief and rage.

Her leg swept out, tangling with his ankles in the cramped space.

Leo lost his balance on the slick, blood-stained floor.

They crashed to the ground together, but this time Tessa landed on top.

Her hand scrambled down his leg and found the cold steel of the backup revolver strapped to his ankle.

She ripped it from the holster and pressed the barrel directly against his chest.

“Manually release the ceiling hatch.”

Leo went perfectly still.

“You do not know how to use that gun.”

Tessa pulled the hammer back with a loud, terrifying click.

Leo stared at her in the dim emergency light, finally realizing she was not bluffing.

He reached up and pulled the emergency release lever, popping the roof hatch open.

Tessa climbed out of the elevator into the dark shaft, leaving him bleeding on the floor.

She shimmied up the greasy cables until she reached the library floor.

She pried the doors open and crawled onto the ruined carpet.

She looked up and saw Luca standing there, aiming an assault rifle directly at her head.
