Chapter 6 - The Breach

The heavy steel doors of the meatpacking plant buckled under the force of a breaching charge. Dust and smoke flooded the room.

Through the haze, Silas stepped into the facility, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries wearing tactical night-vision goggles.

"Hold them off!" Julian shouted, diving behind a rack of servers as high-caliber bullets shredded the concrete where he had just been standing.

Elena returned fire, her shots precise and measured, dropping one of the mercenaries. But they were vastly outgunned. Sparks rained down as bullets destroyed the million-dollar server racks.

"The decryption is at ninety percent!" the Fixer yelled over the deafening gunfire, frantically typing on his keyboard.

Julian needed to create a distraction. He pulled out his laptop, jammed an ethernet cable into a live server port, and hacked into the building's industrial control system. He accessed the massive, dormant refrigeration units above them.

With a few keystrokes, he overrode the safety valves.

A pressurized cloud of freezing liquid nitrogen blasted from the ceiling pipes, flooding the combat zone with zero-visibility white smoke and plummeting the temperature. The mercenaries screamed as the freezing gas blinded their thermal optics.

"Done!" the Fixer yelled, pulling the glowing titanium drive from the terminal. He tossed it to Julian. "Get out through the loading dock! Go!"

Julian grabbed the drive and Elena's hand. They sprinted blindly through the freezing fog, bursting out into the freezing Chicago night, the sound of Silas's enraged gunfire echoing behind them.
