Chapter 5 - The Broker in the Shadows

Decrypting Vanguard's ledger wasn't something they could do on a standard laptop. The encryption algorithm was military-grade, designed to trigger a self-destruct sequence if brute-forced. They needed processing power. Massive processing power.
"We need the Fixer," Elena said, loading a pair of handguns into a tactical duffel bag.
"The Fixer?" Julian asked. "I thought he was an urban legend on the dark web."
"He's real. And he owes me a favor," Elena replied.
They moved through the city like ghosts, utilizing the underground pedway system to avoid Vanguard's facial recognition sweeps. They arrived at an abandoned meatpacking plant on the outskirts of the city.
Inside, the air was thick with the hum of thousands of synchronized servers. The Fixer was a frail, elderly man in a wheelchair, surrounded by a fortress of glowing monitors. He didn't ask questions. He simply took the titanium drive from Elena and plugged it into a specialized terminal.
"Vanguard Holdings," the Fixer rasped, staring at the screen. "You two kicked a hornet's nest. I can crack the outer shell, but it will take exactly forty-five minutes. And the moment I initiate the sequence, Vanguard's cyber-team will trace the power spike to this location."
"Do it," Julian said.
They sat in agonizing silence, watching the progress bar crawl across the screen. 10%... 25%... 40%...

At the thirty-minute mark, the perimeter alarms in the warehouse began to shriek. Red strobe lights bathed the servers in a hellish glow.
"They're here," Elena said, chambering a round in her pistol. "Silas found us."
