Chapter 4 - The Backup Drive

There was only one person left he could trust: Elena, their third co-founder and lead cryptographer.
Julian navigated the back alleys, avoiding cameras and main streets until he reached an underground parking garage in the South Loop. Elena lived out of a converted shipping container in an off-the-grid warehouse—a testament to her own deep-seated distrust of the digital world.
He pounded on the corrugated steel door. It slid open a fraction, revealing the barrel of a shotgun, followed by Elena's sharp, calculating eyes.
"Marcus is dead," Julian choked out, his voice cracking.
Elena’s eyes widened. She pulled him inside and slammed the heavy door, throwing three deadbolts. The warehouse was a chaotic mess of servers, wires, and EMP-shielded boxes.
"I told you," Elena whispered, pacing furiously. "I told you Vanguard's financials were too clean. Nobody pays forty-two million dollars in liquid cash without a sinister motive."
"They're a laundering front," Julian said, collapsing onto a worn sofa. "They used our code to erase their tracks. And they're killing us to secure the backdoor."
Elena stopped pacing. She walked over to a heavy steel floor safe, spun the dial, and pulled out a small, titanium-cased external hard drive.
"What is that?" Julian asked.
"Before we handed over the source code, I ran a deep packet inspection on Vanguard's internal servers," Elena said, her voice trembling but resolute. "I scraped twenty terabytes of their transaction data. I have every dirty deal they've made in the last five years right here."

Julian stared at the drive. "That’s a death warrant, Elena."
"No," she replied, her eyes hardening with fierce determination. "It's our only leverage. If we decrypt this and threaten to release it, they back off. Or we burn their entire empire to the ground."
